So I talked about Mental State awhile back, only to find out that after finally getting into these guys, they’re calling it quits due to vocalist Tyler Shelton’s departure. Rather unfortunate, but sometimes it’s best to call it a day rather than drag your career into the ground.
Well, here’s their first album that I initially wrote off when I first heard it, but I’m glad I gave it a second chance. To think I thought they were just another band in the vein of Black Tongue… pfft. This fucking CRUSHES, and unlike their later efforts, this has some savage bass drops and 30 BPM breakdowns. Goddamn. The title track itself is the shining star, with Tyler’s torturous vocals showing no restraint. I’m not gonna lie, at times he kind of reminds me of what if Principal McVicker from Beavis and Butt-head did vocals. I love it.
